3-A Volunteers

On World Standards Day, 3-A Sanitary Standards, Inc. joins the global standards community in recognizing the experts, volunteers and organizations whose collaborative work turns technical knowledge into standards that serve industry and the public.

World Standards Day is observed annually on October 14 by the members of ISO, IEC and ITU to recognize the collaborative efforts of experts who develop voluntary International Standards. The 2026 theme is “Shared vision for a better world: Spotlight on SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy.”

At 3-A SSI, this year's World Standards Day arrives at an especially appropriate moment. Across the organization's standards-development program, technical experts representing equipment fabricators, processors and users, regulators and other stakeholders are actively participating in the development and maintenance of hygienic equipment standards.

New Ad Hoc Working Groups Moving Into Action

Five new 3-A SSI Ad Hoc Working Groups are moving from canvassing and formation into project kickoff:

  • Insulated Tanks (01-09)
  • Blending Equipment (35-04)
  • Inlet and Outlet Leak-Protector Plug-Type Valves for Milk and Milk Products (56-00)
  • Italian-Type Pasta Filata Style Cheese Moulders (71-01)
  • HTST and HHST Pasteurizer Systems (603-07)

3-A SSI's canvass sought expertise from fabricators, processors and users, regulators, inspectors, researchers and hygienic-design specialists, with opportunities to participate as voting members or observers.

Standards Already Advancing Through Technical Review

Another group of 3-A SSI projects is further along in the development process, addressing:

  • Silo-Type Storage Tanks (22-08)
  • Non-Coil Type Batch Processors (25-03)
  • Mechanical Conveyors for Dry Products (41-03)
  • Disc-Type Valves (57-02)
  • Supplying Air Under Pressure (604-05)

These projects are part of 3-A SSI's broader standards-modernization work, including review of equipment-specific requirements in relation to the 3-A Sanitary Standard for General Requirements (00-02).

Open for Public Comments

The Disc-Type Valves (57-02) project has already produced a proposed update that is currently open for public comment with a Nov. 16, 2026, deadline.

  1. Request the review packet. You'll receive the current standard, the General Requirements and the proposal.
  2. Review the changes. Proposed deletions appear in red strikethrough. Proposed additions appear in blue underline.
  3. Submit your comments by Nov. 16, 2026.

The work is supported not only by voting members but also by observers.

Join a Working Group as an Observer

All 10 of the active Working Groups remain open to volunteers who would like to join as an observer.

Thank You to Our Volunteers

On World Standards Day, 3-A SSI thanks the volunteers, technical experts, industry participants, regulators and stakeholders who contribute their knowledge and time to the consensus process.

Their work helps ensure that 3-A Sanitary Standards and Accepted Practices continue to provide practical, technically sound hygienic-design criteria for the industries they serve.

Happy World Standards Day from 3-A SSI.
