Inside 3-A SSI

New Beginnings: Reflections from the Executive Director's Desk

As I mark my first quarter as Executive Director of 3-A Sanitary Standards, Inc., I find myself both humbled and energized by the critical role our organization plays in the global food safety landscape. These initial months have been a period of learning, new connections, and growing appreciation for the foundational work 3-A SSI conducts in promoting hygienic equipment design across the food and dairy industries.

Building Connections in the Industry

The past three months have offered me an invaluable education through dozens of conversations with our volunteers spanning processors, equipment manufacturers, regulatory officials, and academic partners. Each discussion has illuminated another facet of the complex ecosystem we serve and reinforced the importance of our mission to enhance hygienic design and food safety.

What has struck me most is the depth of expertise within our community. From engineers who can discuss the intricate details of equipment design to food safety professionals who articulate the real-world implications of proper sanitation, the knowledge base of our volunteers is truly impressive. These conversations have accelerated my understanding of both the technical aspects of hygienic design and the practical challenges facing different sectors of the industry.

The Power of Volunteer Dedication

If there's one thing that distinguishes 3-A SSI, it's the remarkable dedication of our volunteers. Through committee meetings, ad hoc working group sessions, and individual conversations, I've witnessed firsthand the passion our volunteers have for the history and legacy of our association.

Many volunteers have shared stories about how the 3-A SSI standards have evolved over decades to address emerging challenges in food processing technology and food safety requirements. Their pride in contributing to the 3-A SSI standards, which directly impact global food safety—is both evident and contagious.

What's particularly striking is how many of our volunteers have dedicated significant portions of their careers to this work, sometimes spanning decades. This long-term commitment speaks volumes about both the importance of our mission and the collaborative culture that has been cultivated throughout our organization's history.

Navigating Economic Challenges: Tariffs and the Dairy Industry

As we look toward the future, I want to briefly address the current economic situation affecting our industry. The Trump Administration has recently implemented significant changes to the U.S. tariff structure. Currently, imports from China face a 145% tariff, while most goods from Canada and Mexico have no tariffs, and imports from all other countries are subject to a 10% tariff.

These policy shifts will undoubtedly impact the dairy equipment sector and the broader food processing industry. Equipment components, replacement parts, and even complete systems may face increased costs and supply chain complications. However, I believe that times of economic disruption can also bring opportunities for innovation and ingenuity.

The current situation may encourage more domestic manufacturing, foster creative solutions to equipment design challenges, and potentially open new markets for equipment that meets 3-A SSI standards. As an organization with a global perspective, we are uniquely positioned to help our volunteers navigate these changes and identify potential growth opportunities.

I'm interested in hearing from you about how these tariffs are affecting your operations. What challenges are you facing? What unexpected opportunities have you discovered? Your real-world experiences will help us better serve the entire community during this period of economic adjustment.

Looking Forward: Global Opportunities

Despite these economic headwinds, I see tremendous opportunities for expanding the impact of the 3-A Symbol and Replacement Parts Mark throughout the world. Food safety is increasingly recognized as a global priority, with consumers, regulatory bodies, and industry players all demanding higher level of accountability for hygienic equipment/systems design and operation.

The 3-A Symbol/Replacement Parts Mark already serves as a recognized mark of excellence, and there remain many markets and sectors where awareness and adoption could be strengthened. Whether through educational initiatives, strategic partnerships, or enhanced communication efforts, we have the opportunity to extend our reach and influence.

I look forward to continuing conversations with volunteers about how we can position the 3-A Symbol/Replacement Parts Mark to help make equipment more hygienic throughout the world. Your insights and perspectives are invaluable as we chart this path forward.

Your Perspective Matters: Policy and Tariff Impact Survey

To better understand how recent U.S. policy and tariff changes are affecting our volunteers, we are conducting a Pulse Poll.   Please take a few minutes to share your experiences. Your input will directly inform our priorities and initiatives moving forward.

Join Us at the 3-A SSI Summit on Hygienic Design

I'm pleased to invite you to the 3-A SSI Summit on Hygienic Design, taking place May 6-8 at the Marriott Chicago O’Hare. This gathering represents an excellent opportunity to engage with the hygienic design community, build your professional network, and discover innovative ways to propel your business forward.

This year we look forward to welcoming food safety advocate, Bill Maler as a keynote presenter. Get a preview in our blog post of our recent interview with Bill.   The Summit will feature expert presentations, interactive demos, and valuable networking opportunities with peers from across the industry. I'm particularly looking forward to meeting many of you in person and continuing the insightful conversations that have enriched my first quarter with 3-A SSI.

I hope to see many of you there as we strengthen our collective commitment to advancing food safety through superior hygienic design. Register here.

An Invitation to Engage

As I continue my journey with 3-A SSI, I invite everyone to reach out and share your perspectives. Whether you're a longtime volunteer or new to the organization, your expertise and insights help shape our collective work and impact.
